SHIPS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
DESIGN & INTEGRATION
When we design the electrical power and distribution system for ships and yachts, it involves careful planning and consideration of various factors to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliability.
These vessels require complex electrical systems to power propulsion systems, navigation equipment, communication devices, and the myriad of onboard amenities and appliances.
Our key considerations and components involved in designing electrical systems for ships and yachts are:
· We determine power requirements by calculating the total power demand considering all electrical loads. These power requirements for various conditions like: cruising, manouvering/docking, port/anchorage, off-duty or emergency/distress are listed in Electrical Energy Balance Sheet.
· Next step is to define power generation.
Ships and large yachts typically have multiple diesel generators of varying capacities to ensure redundancy. We choose generators size and their number based on the calculated load and the need for redundancy to ensure power availability in case of a generator failure.
· Then we design:
– Main Switchboard
– Emergency Switchboard
– Transitional Power Source (UPS)
– Distribution Boards for different parts of the ship
– starters, controllers and drives for the machinery
– Bow Thruster drives and control
– specifying cables in the Cable Book
– cable trays and transits
– battery systems for start, service and emergency duty
– main engines, gear and steering control
– lighting
· Safety systems has been designed too:
– Bilge pumps and alarms
– Fire pumps
– Fire detection and Fire Alarm System
– Fire supression
– Public Addressing
– Talk Back
– Emergency Engine Telegraph
– General Alarm
– Emergency lights
– Safety & Monitoring System for Generators and Main Engines and…
· Radio communcation, Navigation and Signalisation systems:
– GMDSS VHF radio
– MF/HF radio
– Inmarsat-C ship earth station
– EPIRB SOSPAS SARSAT and AIS-EPIRB
– Radars
– AIS
– Navtex
– GNSS receiver
– Speed log
– Gyro compass and standard magnetic compass
– Echo sonder
– ECDIS navigational charts
– BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System)
– Auto pilot
– Navigational light controller and navigational lights
– ships whistle
· Besides those mandatory systems we could also proivide:
– Entertainment equipment
– Sat TV
– Starlink hi-speed internet
– Wi-Fi hot spots
– CCTV video surveillance
– smart room or smart lighting
· Our designs meets the requirements of relevant authorities:
– SOLAS Convention
– IMO (International Maritime Organisation)
– ITU (International Telecommunication Union)
· and classification societies:
– CRS, DNV GL, ABS, RINA and others as necessary
· In case of yacht design we comply also to:
– Passanger Yacht Code (of Malta Ship Registry)
– Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part A (Large Yacht Code up to 12 passangers)
– Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part B (Passanger Yacht Code up to 36 passangers)
